Frequently Asked Questions

Are services covered under insurance?

Our services are not covered by OHIP but are often covered by extended health insurance plans and are tax-deductible. The coverage for each insurer is different, so please check your plan to confirm coverage for Psychotherapy services, the claim procedure, details required on receipts, and whether you will require a letter of referral from your physician. If you have extended health coverage, we may be able to bill directly to your insurer (please check with me to confirm if your insurer allows this) or you will submit your receipt to the insurance company after payment to receive reimbursement. It is your responsibility to submit your paid receipt to your insurer to obtain reimbursement. Fees must be paid regardless of insurance coverage.

What is your cancellation policy?

There’s a 24-hour cancellation policy. Please contact me at 437-772-1136 or info@heartoheal.ca a minimum of 24 hours prior to your appointment if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Please leave a message or send an email if you are not able to reach me by phone, otherwise, you will be charged for the session.

It says that you offer free 15-minute consultation. What is the purpose of a consultation?

The single most important factor in successful therapy outcomes is being matched with the right therapist. When the match is right, you feel comfortable and can build a healthy, trusting therapeutic relationship in a safe space. Consultations generally take place over the phone, but you can also have a video consultation upon request. A consultation is your opportunity to share your needs and goals for therapy and for your therapist to share ways that they can support you. You can ask any questions that you might have for your therapist.

How long will it take for me to heal?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.

Are sessions completely confidential?

Your privacy and confidentiality are of the utmost importance to us. Your personal information will be kept strictly confidential, meaning that no information can be shared with others without explicit consent from you. There are certain exceptions to confidentiality according to Ontario law (e.g., child protection, health professional sexual abuse, court order) or ethical/professional standards (e.g., risk of serious bodily harm). This will be discussed with you during your first session.

Limits of Confidentiality:

HARM - If your therapist has reason to believe you are in danger of harming yourself or that you may harm another person, your therapist may contact your listed emergency contact, emergency services, or the police, and attempt to warn that other person of your intentions.

CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY - If your therapist has reason to believe a) a minor (under age 18) needs protection due to neglect, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse caused by yourself or another person, your therapist must inform Children’s Aid Society (CAS); or b) an elderly person has, is, or may be in danger of neglect or abuse, your therapist will contact emergency services or the police.

LEGAL AND PROFESSIONAL - Your therapist must comply with court orders for records. Your therapist has a duty to report when a regulated health professional has sexually abused a patient. Your therapist will consult with a supervisor or colleague when required for training and to improve treatment, and your therapist will comply with any regulatory requirement for a practice audit.

How do I know if you’re the “Right Fit” for me?

Good question!

Some studies show that the fit between the client and the therapist is exceptionally important for successful therapy. This is the reason we believe the initial consultation is of paramount importance to your therapeutic experience at Hear to Heal Counselling.

Every therapist has a different style, personality, and areas of expertise, which is why you want to put careful attention into matching up with the best one possible for you. You want to have a great experience and meet with someone you can relate to on a weekly basis sharing your vulnerable story.
