Anger Management Counselling Program
We offer a structured Individual Anger Management Counselling Program intended to support clients who require anger management counselling in a legal or court-related context, as well as clients seeking voluntary support.
The program is based on a six (6) session model, with each session lasting one (1) hour, for a total of six (6) counselling hours. The program will be evidence-informed, goal-oriented, and focused on emotional regulation, accountability, communication, conflict resolution, and long-term prevention strategies.
Session structure is as follows:
-
Session 1: Intake, Orientation, and Psychoeducation
Objective: Complete intake, confirm client goals and requirements, review confidentiality limits, and introduce the emotional, cognitive, and physiological components of anger. -
Session 2: Early Warning Signs, Triggers, and Stress Link
Objective: Help the client identify personal warning signs, situational triggers, and the connection between stress and anger escalation. -
Session 3: Emotional Regulation Skills and De-escalation
Objective: Teach practical strategies for managing emotional intensity, including grounding, pause-and-respond techniques, cognitive reframing, and impulse control. -
Session 4: Healthy Expression, Assertive Communication, and Empathy
Objective: Support the client in replacing aggressive, passive, or avoidant responses with respectful communication, I-statements, active listening, empathy, and perspective-taking. -
Session 5: Problem-Solving, Conflict Resolution, and Managing Expectations
Objective: Teach structured problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, negotiation, compromise, and identification of unrealistic expectations that may contribute to anger. -
Session 6: Accountability, Prevention, Maintenance, and Consolidation
Objective: Review client progress, reinforce personal responsibility and self-monitoring, and develop a written prevention and maintenance plan with practical coping strategies and supports. -
The program content aligns with the key anger management topics; including understanding anger, recognizing early warning signs, emotional regulation, healthy anger expression, stress management, communication skills, problem-solving, conflict resolution, empathy, managing expectations, accountability, and prevention planning.
Where relevant, it includes broader domestic violence and relationship safety considerations: including respectful communication, dealing with conflict, responsibility and accountability, healthy relationships, boundaries, and the effect of abusive behaviour.
Upon successful completion, a formal completion letter and hours of attendance will be provided. The letter would include the client’s name, date of birth where appropriate, program start and completion dates, number of sessions attended, total counselling hours completed, confirmation of attendance and participation, a summary of topics covered, and a brief clinical impression based on participation during the counselling sessions.
The clinical impression would be limited to observations from the counselling process, such as engagement, cooperation, receptiveness to feedback, demonstrated insight, participation, and use of learned strategies. We recognize the importance of clarifying that clinician observations during sessions may not necessarily correspond to a client’s behaviour outside the counselling setting.
